About This Couse:
Students completing this course will gain the skills and knowledge required to provide an advanced first aid response to emergencies in aquatic environments in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to individuals working as pool lifeguards in public and private aquatic facilities, including swimming pools, water parks, and leisure centers.
Important Information:
Practical training involves swimming both in shallow and deep water. Participants must have adequate physical fitness and good health as activities involve various levels of physical exertion and simulated role plays.

Training and assessment are done on behalf of ABC First Aid, RTO 3399
Course Prerequisites:
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid – current certificate must be produced for evidence.
Course Prerequisites - Annual Refresher:
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid – current certificate must be produced for evidence.
A current SISSS00133 Pool Lifeguard Certificate must be produced as evidence for the annual refresher.
Assessment Requirements:
Assessment activities will include a knowledge test and practical assessments. Students will be required to complete specific assessment components including but not limited to:
- Swim 200 metres in less than 6 minutes unaided
- Swim 25 metres to retrieve a replicated person from the deepest water no greater than 2 metres in depth, then tow the unconscious casualty for at least 25 meters.
- Complete a 10 metre swim and then perform a contact tow of a conscious casualty for at least ten metres, then remove person from water without assistance.
- Complete a 25-metre swim and a 25 metre non-contact tow of a conscious casualty.
- Work as a team to perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty in both shallow and deep water.
- Perform a range of CPR activities with and without Bag Valve Mask and oxygen resuscitation equipment.
- Using oxygen therapy in the appropriate environments, including assembly, fault finding and managing malfunctions of oxygen equipment.
